January 1, 2013 Pier Park hosted its annual beach ball drop this year for New Year's Eve, and the event drew thousands of men, women and children for the festivities. As has become the custom, they dropped 10,000 beach balls for the kids at 8:00 PM and had a fireworks show, with the big beach ball drop and more fireworks from the pier at midnight, after several hours of musical entertainment on the big stage. Here is just a small sample: July 4, 2012 Pier Park was the place to be for the 4th of July again this year. See the video for the general feel. Spring 2012 New to Pier Park this year is the fun restaurant called Dick's Last Resort, in the space formerly occupied by Guy Harvey's. Here, the wait staff is rude and obnoxious and won't hesitate to embarrass you at your table, and people can't wait to come back for more. Be sure to ask for a hat! January 1, 2011 News about Pier Park is obviously getting around, as in just three short years, the New Year's Eve celebration at Pier Park has gone from a simple event to a "destination" event drawing well over 10,000 visitors for the free concert (this year featuring the hot, award-winning, new country act, Gloriana.), free games for the kids, carnival rides at the Miracle Strip, a family-friendly ball drop at 8:00 PM (so the younger kids could participate and take home a beach ball dropped from perches above the street), and the official Beach Ball Drop at midnight. Two rounds of fireworks launched from the end of the pier (at both 8:00 PM and midnight) resulted in a huge success and lots of fun for both residents and tourists alike. The weather even cooperated and gave us a pleasant evening for the festivities. Fireworks on major holidays are seeming to become the norm at Pier Park, so come visit when you have a chance, and enjoy the show! Miracle Strip at Pier Park Continues to Add Rides Officials recently announced that the original (albeit restored and relocated) Starliner Roller Coaster has been purchased and will soon be installed adjacent to Pier Park. Here is a video of the roller coaster, which will continue to add excitement to the Pier Park area:
Last year's Mardi Gras parade was so popular that it has expanded this year to a two day event, starting Friday at noon and featuring a parade, children's parade, live bands, classic car displays, and a fireworks show. See the video shown below for some of the highlights of last year's parade. January 10, 2010 The outdoor recreation portion of Pier Park has been extremely popular and will soon expand to include additional entertainment options. In addition to the gravity-defying jump, sand volleyball pit, and the refurbished Miracle Strip carousel, it is reported that a few additional amusement rides from the Miracle Strip Amusement Park will be added in the spring. January 1, 2010 The New Year's Eve bash at Pier Park was a resounding success, with thousands of revelers flocking to to the site to ring in the new year with a concert and ball drop. Click here for a video recap of the festivities. August 28, 2009 Construction has begun on new amenities for the entrance to the county pier at Pier Park. Parking, a restaurant, restroom facilities, and a bait and tackle shop will soon be added to complete the construction at the pier site. |
